These are the cities with the most (and least) drinkersl
These are the cities with the most (and least) drinkerslThese are the cities with the most (and least) drinkerslThirty percent of the US population abstains from drinking. Although some experts expect this percentage to rise amongst young peoplein the coming years, (thanks in large part to social media oddly enough)global alcohol consumption is actually at an all-time high. It has increased by 70% in the last 30 years according to a study published this year in the Lancet.America does its fair share in surging these numbers, given 56% of its own population are habitual drinkers, and an additional 26.9% are confessed binge drinkers. A study conducted on more than34,000 adults released just last year found roughly 40% of Americans consume excessive amounts of alcohol, which is 10% more than the one in three heavy drinkers reported in Prevalence of Alcohol Dependence Among US Adult Drinkers, 20092011,which was from 2014.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard co vering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreAmericans love booze, that much is well-documented but which citiesin the US house the greatest numbers of the minority that chose to steer completely clear of the stuff? In order to find out, Alcohol.org pulled data on the percentage of non-drinkers in the 100 largest cities in America from city-data.com.Where are the non-drinkers?As a resident that witness at least 30 subway barf sessions a weekend, I was surprised to learn New York City has the highest number of non-drinkers in the country by a lot. There are 804, 420 non-partakers currently occupying the big apple, though its important to remember, New York City is a big place, with a massive population, so massive in fact, that even though they house the highest number of non-drinkers, they dont actually house the highest percentage of non-drinkers. A City Life Index Survey conducted last year found that 91% of New Yorkers enjoy hitting the sauce. The distin ction between the lowest percentage of non-drinkers goes to Honolulu, Hawaii. Twenty-one percent of HIs population opt notto imbibe alcoholic beverages, which makes it the number one percentage wise by a pretty wide margin. Fermont California comes in at number two, with 15.50% non-drinkers, Hialeah, Florida with 14.60%, San Francisco, California, with 14.10% and Detroit Michigan rounding out the top five non-drinkers with 13.40%.Half of the top 10 cities with the largest percentage of non-drinkers are in California. The authors of the new report also note how it is that a large portion of non-drinkers additionally lives near beaches and large bodies of water.Gilbert, Arizona has the lowest percentage of non-drinkers of all the US states observed in the study, with only 9% of its population reported. Two-thirds of the heaviest drinkers featured in the survey were located in the Southwest. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know yo ur social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Mental models and making decisions you dont regret
Mental models and making decisions you dont regretMental models and making decisions you dont regretWhat makes a good decision? When I ask people that question, I often get answers likeWhen the outcome is successful. Why is it that we, as a society, romanticize outcomes? Only things and people that succeed are celebrated. Just look at all the articles and books that idolize successful people. And to a degree, thats obvious. But its also misleading. We tend to overlook cases that didnotcome with a successful outcome. And when wedolook at failure, we are often quick to explain why things failed. In hindsight,we can all look at mistakes and say that it was imminent. But if preventing mistakes is that easy, why are we still make decisions that we regret?Take the case of the Titanic. Looking back, we all know that the luxury liner that traveled from Southampton to New York made many costly mistakes. For example, it is well known that the Titanic didnt carry enough lifeboats. What happens when all the lifeboats are used in case of an emergency? is something that someone surely said, right? We just dont know We werentthere. How about another interesting fact? The Titanic was tested for6 hoursand never with a full crew. After that, they loaded up the passengers and set sail towards New York.Shouldnt we try this thing out mora before we bring passengers on board? someone surely said. I guess not.But heres the thing. No onewantedthe Titanic disaster to happen. And no one predicted it Untilafterthe fact.A few decades before all those innocent people died, Fyodor Dostoevsky famously saidEverything seems stupid when it fails.Bad decisions and good decisionsIts easy to look at success and attribute it to good decision making. But heres the thing- that statement is also true the other way around.Failure is not always explained by bad decision making. However, thats what most historians do. But like Dostoevsky said,in hindsight failure is always obvious. The people who were responsi ble for the Titanic probably thought they were making the right decisions at the time. After the fact, they probably regretted many things. But I dont think good or bad decisions have anything to do with the outcome. Peter Bevelin, the author ofSeeking Wisdom, puts it wellGood decisions can lead to bad outcomes and vice versa. The truth is You cant predict the future. Sometimes even bad decisions can lead to good outcomes. So thats why I think its pointless when people pretend they can teach you how to make good decisions. Theres no such thing. Any person whos failed a lot in life will tell you that.Mental models Focus on the process, not the outcomeThe way you look at how something works in the real world is called amental model. Its your thinking framework aboutsomething. But when we make decisions, we often dont think about our framework and immediately jump to a discussion about potential outcomes. We ask, What will happen if we make this decision?Thats an incomprehensive method beca use youre not questioning your decision-making process. Youre only looking at the outcome. But have you considered what specific thinking frameworks (mental models) you can use for your decision?Too often, we skip the process and jump right to deciding. Maybe thats due to a lack of time, resources, or knowledge - it doesnt matter.Whatever your reason is, its never an excuse to skip the decision-making process altogether. Because thats the only way to become a bad decision maker - regardless of the outcome. So instead of focusing on how successful your choices are, focus on how comprehensive your decision-making process is.Look, you dont have to know everything about mental models - I certainly dont. Most pseudo-intellectuals spend more timetalkingabout what a mental model is instead of using them to achieve anything meaningful in life. They just like todefinemental models. But as you and I both know, knowledge without application is useless.Thats why I recommend reading only the fol lowing 3 books that focus on this topicSeeking Wisdom by Peter Bevelin - Discusses the mental models of Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett.Fooled By Randomness by Nassim Taleb - One of my favorite mental models. Helps with understanding how random events influence outcomes.Nudge by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein - Explains how our decisions are influenced by different factors. We can never predict the future, nor can we know all mental models that exist. But wecanmake decisions we dont regret.By simply focusing on the thinking process, we can always say we did the right thing. And thats the only sure way to avoid regret- no matter what the outcome is.Whats the right thing? Its clear we should never regret making mistakes. Every mistake is a lesson after all. However, theres another type of regret that literally kills people. Its the regret of inaction.Ive seen this up close with my grandmother. At the end of her life, she drowned in her own sorrow. And that sorrow was solely made up from regret about the things she never did.Look, no matter what you do, we all suffer in life. But theres a difference in suffering, as Jim Rohn once saidWe must all suffer one of two things the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment.Achieving your goals. Improving yourself and your relationships. Writing a book. Building a business. Its painful. It takes a lot of time, energy, and sacrifice to achieve things that are worthwhile in life. But you know whats also painful? The regret of inaction, disappointment, and laziness.Which type of suffering hurts more? Its up to you to decide. Thanks for readingI also wrote a book on this topic. Its called THINK STRAIGHT.Check it out if you want to learn more about controlling your thoughts.Thisarticlefirst appeared onDarius Foroux.

The 4 Kinds of Professional Respect Which Ones Have to Be Earned and Shown
The 4 Kinds of Professional Respect Which Ones Have to Be Earned and Shown Rodney Dangerfield, gruff sputtering Las Vegas and Hollywood comic and legend, parlayed his catchphrase I cant get no respect into a very likeable career persona. That comedic lament made him a spokesperson for everyone with the same complaint, but bedrngnis always the same humorous give or take on it.Indeed, far too many among his constituency are deadly serious about respectespecially and often only lack of it, sometimes with tragic and fearful consequences. Some will respond violently on what can amount to no mora than the mere suspicion of having been dissed, no matter how trivially (parking lots, fast-food drive-ins, streets, sidewalks and other venues that feature cars disproportionately and intriguingly figuring prominently in respect-related violent incidents, such as shootings, beatings and stabbings).Of course, giv en the more genteel venues you professionally occupy and frequent, it is unlikely that anyone in them is going to pull out a Glock and shoot holes in your clock because of some lapse of courtesy or other fasson of real or imagined disrespect. But they and you can seethe nonethelesseven without a clue as to how close to going postal or becoming a victim of it you have come.Dissed-Off in the NewsroomAs a real and recent illustration, I can cite boil-over venting yesterday, the day before yesterday and the day before from an otherwise very placid, senior journalist friend of mine with a long, heavyweight resume and a currently very short, now sputtering fuse. Now hes stewing (over) his Plan B in dealing with what he perceives to be a sabotaging, devious, professionally fraudulent, sexist-nepotistic and incompetent newcomer, overreaching manager, namely, to punch him about five times, or let a wall do it for himas a response to perceived transgressions and injustices that clearly involve dimensions of respect, no matter how it is conceived.Of course, nobody, including you and me, wants to be on the receiving or dishing end of that kind of confrontation, or even to merely feel bad about respect issues with anyone. Thats why a clear understanding of the gestalts, manifestations, prerequisites, boundaries, rights and obligations of respect is critical to avoiding, preventing or managing trouble and misunderstanding related to it or confusion and miscommunication about any of its many faces and facets.Like love, respect is a (conveniently) vague, ambiguous, mostly unexamined, chameleon and accordion, yet highly visceral and emphatic concept wielded as we see fit, including in the middle of a fit thrown over a lack of it.The 4 Forms and Confusions of RespectSo, to forestall and undo trouble, heres my list of the kinds of respectprofessional and otherwiseto consider when expecting, hoping for, demanding, offering or withholding it. Note that I regard these as reportive c oncepts, elend stipulative. This means that I take these to be the actual, even if only implicit, operative senses of respect, rather than my ideas and advice about what respect should mean.Tolerance Putting up with what someone else wants, needs, hopes for or expects, in the form of forbearance from actions against themAdmiration Expressed or felt esteem for and encouragement of abedrngnishers traits, states, behavior, etc.Deference Submissive attitudes, behaviors, expressions as indicators or acceptance of (claimed or sought) superior status of anotherAcknowledgment Recognition of the positive value of the existence of another or his or her endeavors, traits, aptitudes, achievements, etc., with no overtones of reluctance (of the sort that tolerance suggests). A simple nod, hi, tip of the hat or vague smile can easily accomplish this. Of all the forms of respect, this is the most basic and deserved without having to be earned in the absence of evident Hitlerian negatives. Now, recon sider my venting journalist friend What is the respect issue and relevant form(s) of respect involved in his conflict with the manager? I know him well and am certain he is not seeking deference or admiration, or any other indication of exalted status. Instead, he is demanding what he perceives as deserved and earned tolerance and acknowledgement and nothing more (which he confirmed me with after I asked him about this). These distinctions are not only important they are also crucial to analysis, resolution, and where possible, prevention of respect-related conflicts like his.Take the case of a young couple bickering about premarital sex, the young woman more committed to chastity than the guy. When she tells him that she wants him to respect her and he declares that he does, there is a real likelihood that they are not talking about the same thing. She may very well be expecting or demanding all four forms of respectthat he should not merely tolerate her quaint notions and resistance , but also admire her for these, defer to her values, and acknowledge the positive value of her values and (non)behaviors. So, when he says, I DO respect you, but means only that he will tolerate her vow or ideals of chastity, while persisting in his efforts to subvert it, he will confuse and ultimately quarrel with (if not be dumped by or dump) her over the issue of lying (on his part) or unreasonableness (on his or her part). Moreover, without a common concept or concepts of respect, negotiation becomes more difficult, as does a fair tally of what form or forms of respect have been earned. Then Theres ArethaTo grasp the range, flexibility, manipulability and forms of respect, compare soulful Aretha Franklins diametrically opposite plea for R-E-S-P-E-C-T, in the form of boudoir propers as she and her chorus sing, A little respect (sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to meWhoa, babe (just a little bit) of respect from her man when he gets home. (Franklins propers even tually morphed into hip-hop cultures propsi.e., displays of recognition as respect.)(Note, like the example of my journalist friend, mine about Romeo and Juli-Nyet is not hypothetical long ago, I counseled a woman who eventually married a man with whom such misunderstandings and mistaken expectations about respect were wrecking their relationship.)A good test of this reportive framework of forms of respect is application to the street and to the office. Why do boys in da hood ever shoot those who diss them? What kind of respect, in not being shown, triggered the trigger? To answer this, it is important to distinguish forms of respect necessary to prevent violence from those sufficient to forestall it.Despite having no personal direct experience, Im willing to guess that primitive primate submission as deference (earned or not) will suffice to prevent an attack. Tolerance can be too complex for a casual encounter, unless there is a specific behavior, unfolding in real time, that is b eing challenged, e.g., smoking in a no-smoking restaurant. In that instance, intolerance, in and of itself, can suffice as a trigger, with a lack of deference and admiration being logically implied by it, whether these are also sought or not.Again, recall my venting friend Although he professionally could get by with being tolerated and acknowledged without any need for deference or admiration, the failure of the manager to tolerate my friends exercise of authority or operations precludes the more robust forms of respect conveyed by deference and admiration, while suggesting that even simple acknowledgement of my friend and his endeavors is also utterly lacking. Also note that tolerance does not imply acknowledgement. It is behaviorally equivalent to forbearance, for whatever reason, including, but not limited to, fear, cunning or pity. In these latter instances, tolerance as respect shades into tolerance as tactic or charity.Arranged in a hierarchy of intensity and status, the four forms can be ranked in various ascending orders of value, which may differ from chronological order of being earned. There may, in some instances, also be some forms not only regarded as irrelevant, but also as unwelcome (e.g., deference in a highly equalitarian organizational structure or individual personality, such as my friends)ToleranceAcknowledgmentAdmirationDeference For example, imagine a squatter family arriving unannounced at some settlement in the American Wild West in relations with native populations and other settlers they will plan on this chronological order, since survival depends on tolerance, deference being achieved only after the squatter becomes a rancher with vast holdings and wealth, while acknowledgment without tolerance will be very problematic (which is possible if tolerance is simply unaffordable, despite acknowledgment of the merits of the squatter).AcknowledgmentToleranceAdmirationDeference Typical office dynamics can embody this sequence, with toleranc e coming after acknowledgement, if only because, unlike a squatter, a new employee is invited and recognized from the outset, which provides a base from which to negotiate what will or will not be tolerated.AcknowledgementTolerance This is what I believe my friend regard as absolutely essential, the rest being at best a bonus or at worst awkward and inconsistent with his modesty and desire for anonymity.Deference, period This may very well be the only form of respect required or effective in the hoodespecially when the line between respect and fear is blurred, as it is in any environment, be it the hood or the flinty boardroom, in which the dominant values are dominance and power.Hence, in such environments, all other forms of respect may not only be irrelevant, but may, in the absence of deference, provoke trouble in virtue of creating interactions, however well-intentioned, that would and should otherwise be avoided, much as imprudently, albeit innocently, saying Howdy to a Wild W est gunslinger, as acknowledgement-respect could attract the wrong kind of attention.Closer to the modern office, misinterpreting an employees expectation of acknowledgement and tolerance as a demand for admiration or deference is likely to start trouble of the sort my journalist friend is now embroiled in and boiling over.As for Rodney Dangerfield, given the gap between his trademark lamentation about no respect and the broad respect he actually gets, I suspect that in moments of longing for privacy, when weary of paparazzi, autographs and camera flashes, he might have enjoyed a little less of any and all of it, in exchange for some delicious obscurityas respect for his privacy, as much as for his jokes.
